Millions of calls are made each day in the UK. If there was only one way to send a message between callers and receivers, then the will soon become overloaded. There are may different ways, called , that messages can travel from one place to another. It is important that these are monitored all the time, so that different routes can be used when some routes become . The phone calls can be transmitted through fibres, and by wave links.
